Privacy Policy
Data Collection
SmartType does not require an account. Every typing mode is fully playable without signing in, and your typing statistics are calculated entirely in your browser either way.
If you choose to sign in with Google, we receive and store the following, via our authentication and database provider, Supabase:
- Your name, email address, and a link to your Google profile picture
- A display name you can set yourself, separate from your Google account name
- Your typing session results (words per minute, accuracy, game mode, input type, session duration, and the date played), so you can view your history and track your progress over time
- For each session, a more detailed breakdown used only to draw the charts on that session's result screen: your words-per-minute measured every second during the session, and per-key statistics (how often each key was mistyped and how long it took you to press it)
We also receive data from these third-party services, regardless of whether you sign in:
- Usage analytics via Google Analytics 4 (page views, session duration, device/browser type, with IP addresses anonymized)
- Advertising cookies via Google AdSense — set only after you accept cookies
- A verification request (your IP address and browser information) from LaunchNest, the startup directory that lists SmartType, sent only after you accept cookies
Data Usage
We use this data only to:
- Operate and improve the typing practice experience
- Operate the optional account feature: keep you signed in, save your typing history, and show your progress over time on your Profile page
- Understand aggregate usage patterns (Google Analytics)
- Serve advertising (Google AdSense), only with your consent
- Detect abnormal input speed locally in your browser to prevent abuse — this check never leaves your device
Data Storage
If you do not sign in, nothing is stored on our servers — your typing statistics are calculated and kept locally in your browser, as always.
If you sign in with Google, your account data (name, email, profile picture link, display name) and typing session history are stored in our database, hosted by Supabase, a third-party database and authentication provider, currently in the South Asia (Mumbai) region. Signing in also involves sharing data with Google as part of the standard Google Sign-In process; see Google's privacy policy for details.
Data collected by our third-party analytics, advertising, and directory-listing providers (Google Analytics, Google AdSense, LaunchNest) is stored and processed under their own privacy policies.
Sharing Your Profile
If you sign in, your profile page includes a share link containing a random token (for example /u?s=3f9c1a2b4d5e). Anyone who has that link can open a read-only version of your profile without signing in. The link is not listed in our sitemap and is not indexed, but it is not password protected, so treat it as public once you share it. This link stays the same permanently and cannot currently be changed or revoked; only the sections it shows can be adjusted from your profile page.
A shared profile always shows your display name and your aggregate typing statistics (number of sessions, total time typing, best and average WPM, average accuracy, and your best result per mode). You can additionally choose to include your daily activity graph, your most recent sessions, your WPM history and distribution charts, and a breakdown by mode and input device; all are off by default.
Your email address, your Google account name and your profile picture are never included in a shared profile.
Sharing a Result
Every result screen has a share link. If you played without signing in, that link encodes only your headline stats (WPM, accuracy, and similar summary numbers) directly in the URL itself — nothing is sent to or stored on our servers to create it.
If you were signed in, the link instead points to that session's record in our database (for example /result?id=3f9c1a2b-...), so it can also show your WPM trend graph and keyboard heatmap for that session. Anyone with the link can view it without signing in; it is not listed in our sitemap and is not indexed, but is not password protected, so treat it as public once you share it. It does not reveal your display name, email, or any other session of yours.
Cookies
If you sign in with Google, SmartType sets a cookie to keep you signed in across visits. This cookie is required for sign-in to work and is set regardless of your cookie consent choice below, since it is only used for a feature you explicitly chose to use.
On your first visit we ask for consent before setting any non-essential cookie or sending any non-essential tracking request; only after you accept do Google Analytics and Google AdSense set cookies to measure usage and serve ads, and does the LaunchNest badge on our homepage send its verification request. You can change your choice anytime via "Cookie Preferences" in the footer, or disable cookies through your browser settings.
Advertising
SmartType uses Google AdSense to serve ads, shown only after you accept cookies. Google and its partners may use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this site or other websites. You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings at https://adssettings.google.com/.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Decline non-essential cookies at any time via Cookie Preferences in the footer
- Opt out of personalized advertising via Google's Ads Settings
- Sign out at any time from your Profile page, which ends your session
- Ask us what, if any, data we hold about you
- Request deletion of your account and all associated data (typing history, display name, and account info)
Contact us at info@smart-type.com to exercise these rights.
